Runtime & Architecture E2B uses Firecracker microVMs as its sandbox primitive. Each sandbox is a fully isolated VM that boots from a snapshot, achieving container-speed startup while maintaining hardware-level isolation. The runtime is open source under the Apache-2.0 license and is self-hostable.
API & SDK Access E2B exposes a full API for sandbox lifecycle management — create, pause, resume, snapshot, fork, and terminate. This enables agent orchestration frameworks to programmatically control compute environments at any stage of an agent's execution.
