Cody leverages Sourcegraph's advanced Search API to retrieve context from both local and remote codebases, feeding that context into the latest large language models (LLMs) to power chat, code completions, and code edits. It integrates natively with GitHub and GitLab as code hosts, and supports IDE extensions for VS Code, JetBrains, and Visual Studio (experimental). The architecture supports context filtering — allowing teams to exclude specific repositories from chat and autocomplete — and is compatible with the broader Sourcegraph platform, including Code Search. Enterprise deployments can be self-hosted via Sourcegraph Enterprise, giving organizations control over data residency and model configuration.
